Can I use my
Windows formatted iPod on a Mac computer?
Yes, however this process is not supported by Apple.

FAT32 hard disks, but unless you are planning to connect the iPod to
a Windows PC frequently, it is generally a better idea to format it as
a Mac drive (HFS+), as it will generally be more reliable.#
:
Can I use my Mac formatted iPod on a Windows PC?
Yes, however you must purchase third party software such as MacOpener
or MacDrive.
If you don't plan to continue connecting your iPod to a Mac,
it is generally a much better idea to use the "Restore" function
of the iPod Updater utility for Windows to format your iPod as a Windows
drive.
Can I use my HP iPod on a Mac?
Yes, but you will not be able to get support from Apple or HP.
So you really need to know what you are doing.
What are the icons displayed on my iPod screen?
Depending on what options you have selected from the settings menu will
depend on which icons will be displayed. This document shows the different
icons that can be seen on the iPod display when playing music, and
using Shuffle, Repeat, and Sleep. These icons only appear on the 'Now
Playing' screen."
How do I stop the iPod from performing auto sync when connected to iTunes?
If I auto-sync, I'll lose some of the music that's only on my iPod!
While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Shift + Ctrl
keys in Windows (CMD + Option keys on a Mac). This will stop the iPod
from auto sync'ing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source
list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will
not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between
3 and 30 seconds depending on your computer.
Then you can right click on
the iPod icon in iTunes' source column and select iPod Options, then
check the "Manually manage songs and
playlists" box. You can now manage your library without losing your
songs on the iPod
Which audio formats does the iPod support?

Bit Rates), WAV, AIFF, Audible, and the Apple Lossless Encoder.
Can I recharge my iPod while I travel overseas without a voltage converter?
Does the iPod's AC adapter support multiple voltages?
Yes, the iPod's AC adapter supports a wide range of voltages. Read the
AppleCare Knowledge Base document
#60939 for more information.
Should I take my iPod out of a case before charging it?
Yes. Apple recommends that you take the iPod out of any case before
charging it. The hard drive won't spin when charging but it still
gets hot inside.
The iPod relies on its stainless steel back to act as a heat sink.
My iPod gets warm (particularly the back) when it is playing and/or recharging.
Should I be worried?
Not unless it gets really hot. It is normal for your iPod to get warm
to the touch, particularly when it is being recharged. Because of this, Apple
recommends that you always remove your iPod from any case while
it is being charged.
If your iPod gets very hot while recharging from the
FireWire port on your computer, be sure that you are unmounting (ejecting)
your iPod while recharging. You can do this on a Mac from within iTunes
or Finder. If you do not do this, the iPod's HDD will spin constantly
while attached to your computer's FireWire port, causing the excessive
heat.

How long can you expect your battery to last?
For more than 500 battery charging cycles (one charging cycle consisting
of draining the battery, then recharging it to a full charge) Depending
on heavy or lighter use, this battery life span can range from approximately
2 or 3 to 8 or 9 years.
How long should I charge the battery when I take it out of the box?
Charging
it for 3 hours before first use is recommended.
How to best charge the battery?
You should recharge it to full charge regularly, before it has an opportunity
to fully discharge.
Does the iPod battery have a memory effect?
No.
What is the difference between charging via FireWire or via AC Adapter?
Many experienced owners always recharge using the AC adapter as opposed
to recharging from the FireWire port on their computers because it is
quicker.
Is the battery meter inaccurate?
Yes. Users have reported that after fully charging the meter shows only
half power. This usually normalizes after a few minutes of use. Also,
with the meter on empty, you can get hours of playing time. The meter
is thus no true indicator of battery power.
If I don't get 8 hours of battery life, is the iPod defective?
Not necessarily. Battery life varies according to use and settings. Doing
a battery test will determine your iPod's performance: load the iPod
with enough tracks to play for at least 8 hours. Allow the iPod to
play the tracks using the standard settings (no EQ, normal volume,
etc.) and without accessing it during this time. The iPod should play
for 7-8 continuous hours.

How do I use the iPod shuffle as a portable hard drive?
Like other iPods, the iPod shuffle can be used as a portable hard drive.
The average person is more likely to use this feature with the shuffle
than with other iPods, because unlike them, the iPod shuffle does not
require the user to carry a connection cable, and it works equally
well on Macs and PCs without drivers or reformatting.
By default, the ability
to access the iPod shuffle as a hard drive is disabled. To enable it,
enter the iPod Preferences page as we did above.
Here you'll find an option
entitled "Enable Disk Use." When
checked, iTunes will allow the iPod shuffle to appear in Windows Explorer
(or the Mac OS's Finder) as a detachable hard drive. The slider positioned
below the checkbox instructs iTunes how much space to leave empty for
data when filling the iPod via either Autofill or manual management.
For example, in the photo above, we've reserved 128MB for non-audio
use. Autofill will only fill the other 380-some Megabytes with music.
My iPod is messed up and I want to start from scratch. How should I format
it?
If you realy need to reformat your ipod.
You should use the "Restore" function in the "iPod Updater" program,
available from Apple. This will format (completely erase) your iPod,
and reload its Firmware to the latest version. You may have used this "iPod
Updater" program in the past to update your iPod to the latest version.
If you don't already have it on your computer, download it free from
http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ .
Never format your iPod from Windows,
the MacOS Finder, or a third party utility. The iPod has hidden partitions,
which contain the iPod's "Firmware" Some
utilities have been known to delete this.
How can I check my iPod's Hard Drive for Errors like running Scan Disk?
The iPod has a Disk Scan utility that can be used to check the hard drive.
Follow these steps:
- Do a Reset - Press the Menu + Pause/Play buttons until the Apple
logo comes up.
- At the Apple logo, press the REW, FF, Menu and "Action" (the
center) buttons.
The iPod will begin to go through a disk scan. At the end you will
be presented with a Disk icon with a check mark or a sad iPod icon.
If you get a sad iPod icon you need to send your iPod in for repair.
My iPod is frozen on the playback screen! Or, my iPod will not turn
on or respond! What do I do?
- 4th generation iPods (includes HP, U2, and iPod Photo) and iPod
mini: Press the "Menu" and Select (center) buttons for about
5 to 10 seconds - until the Apple logo appears.
- 3rd generation and older
iPods: Press the "Play/Pause" and "Menu" buttons
- hold for about 5 to 10 seconds - until the Apple logo appears.
This
will reset (reboot) your iPod. Please note - if you are running version
1.2 of the firmware this will reset your iPod's clock. Otherwise,
it changes nothing else on your iPod My iPod is stuck on the Apple logo. I can't get it to change. I've tried
pressing all the buttons (e.g. a Reset) but it still won't respond.
What can I do?
Try Forced Firewire Mode. If the Apple logo is not showing on your iPod,
try a Reset by pressing and holding the Menu + Pause/Play buttons for
10 seconds or so. At the Apple logo, press the FF and REW buttons until
it says "OK to Disconnect". Then connect your iPod to the
computer.
Unmount it normally, it should be back to normal. If not, put
it back into Forced Firewire Mode and do a Restore with the Apple Software
Updater.
What do I do when I turn on my iPod, and I see a folder icon with a exclamation
mark?
The cause of this could be several things. For an explanation of each,
and recommended courses of action, read AppleCare Knowledge Base document
#61003.
What do I do when I turn on my iPod, and I see a disc icon (looks like
a CD) with a magnifying glass (or an exclamation mark, or a check mark,
or an arrow, or an 'X')?
This happens when iPod thinks there is a problem with its hard disk drive,
and it is automatically running a disk scan in an attempt to correct
the problem. The disk icon with the magnifying glass (with a status bar)
is displayed while the scan is running, and the other displays indicate
the results of the scan. For an explanation of each, read AppleCare Knowledge
Base document
#60943.
Why is my iPod remote not working?
The most likely cause is the remote is not pushed in all the way. Push the
plug into the iPod firmly, making sure you hear it click. Apple has published
an AppleCare Knowledge Base document on the issue: iPod: Remote Buttons Do
Not Work |
